Lee Young Ae - South Korea's Beautiful Jewel

IN THE past, I have often mistaken Korean actors and actresses for their Japanese counterparts. I admit I know very little about these Koreans until Jewel In The Palace was shown on TV in Malaysia.

Before this TV series, there have been a series of Korean TV serials that took Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines by storm. Thank god for the subtitles, otherwise none of us could relate to the Korean TV shows and movies.

Practically, the only person I can associate right now with Korean shows is Lee Young Ae. She's that very sweet actress who landed the coveted role in Jewel In The Palace and brought more publicity to South Korea than the entire South Korean Tourism Authority and Tourism Ministry combined.

For a while back there, Lee was nicknamed the Asian Sweetheart. It's true, she's really quite pretty. Hong Kong has fallen head over heels in love with her when her TV series overtook all its local productions in the popularity ratings.

I recall seeing her being interviewed on Hong Kong television. She was very careful in how she conducted herself as she knew she represented her entire nation. In the interview, she projected herself as being intelligent, demure and soft-spoken. Qualities that every Asian mother would want in a daughter and every Asian man would want in a wife.

The direct translation of Jewel In The Palace which stamped her mark permanently in the television hall of ame is Dae Jang Geum. It was reported that when the concluding episode of this series was shown in Hong Kong, about half of Hong Kong's population stayed home to watch it.

Lee was born on January 31, 1971 in Seoul. She's of normal height for an Asian woman - 1.65m. Before anyone can jump to the conclusion that she's "just an ordinary actress of no great significance", let it be known that she has a Bachelor's degree from the Hanyang University in German language and literature.

So we can safely assume that Lee speaks German quite fluently. If that is not enough, Lee also has a Masters degree from Chung-an University. She majored in theatre and film. She also speaks English quite well.

The Korean actress has two other siblings. Both of them brothers.

For the benefit of her hardcore fans, Lee Young Ae loves horse-riding, swimming, and playing the piano. And when she has a lot of free time, she also dabbles in a bit of singing. Even though, she hasn't won any singing contest, I reckon in the eyes of her admirers, she's already a Korean Idol of sorts.

Since 1994, Lee has been winning awards almost on a yearly basis. In 1994, she took the Best New Actress title at the SBS Drama Awards. The following year, she collected the prize for popularity at the KBS Drama Awards.

In 1996, Lee was named the most Outstanding Actress at the MBC Drama Awards. This was followed by two consecutive years of Best Actress at the 1997 and 1998 SBS Drama Awards. In 1999, she took the Popularity Prize again at the KBS Drama Awards.

The millennium year of 2000 was a "lean" year for her. No awards. Then in 2001, she practically ran home with the Most Photogenic Award at the Korean Movie & Music Awards. That same year, Lee collected the Best Actress Award for her role in One Fine Spring Day at the Pusan Film Critics Awards.

Skipped one year to 2003. This time she won the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards. Last year at the International Film Festival at Catalunya, she pipped all the other nominees for the Best Actress awared for Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

The same movie also garnered her the Best Actress award at the 2005 Blue Dragon Film Festival. This year, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance won her the Best Actress title at Baeksang Awards ceremony.

It is a little known fact that Lee Young Ae made her first television appearance in a chocolate advertisement with Hong Kong actor Andy Lau Tak Wah in 1991.

Early this year, Lee signed a two-year contract with that giant Korean electronics company, LG Electronics, to promote their products. So if you have been taking the LRT and Monorail in Klang Valley, you may have noticed all the advertisements on the walls of these transportation systems.

Lee Young Ae is now the official spokesmodel for LG Electronics in the Pan Asian region. Your guess is as good as mine. She's probably earning very much more from this deal than from her last three movies.

Anyway, it's steady income of mega proportions. Apart from LG Electronics, she has also appeared in commercials for Samsung and Korean Telecom.

Two of Lee's most notable fans are Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-Fatt, Andy Lau and the Hu Jintao, the president of China. In January this year, Lee was given the special honour of being of invited to sit on the official jury panel in the prestigious 56th Berlin International Film Fesitval.

It was the first time, a South Korean actress has been selected to sit on this panel of judges.

In case, any men out there want to know, she's still single. Her nickname, among close friends, is "the oxygen woman". Don't ask me why they call her that. She's also known as Li Ying Ai in some circles.

There seems to be no lack of movie offers or opportunities for this sweet lady. At 35, she's probably the most well known South Korean around the world right now.

We can safely assume that we will be hearing more about her in the days and months to come.

当泡菜还是幼苗

　　1971年1月31日，我出生在汉城玉水洞，家中还有两个哥哥，我是老小。由于生得晚，我与两个哥哥的年龄相差很大，在童年的记忆里，最让我感到遗憾的是当时奶奶因为我是女孩子而根本不爱搭理我。我的父母和奶奶迥然不同，他们得了女儿很高兴。

　　“寿星脑袋”是我小时候的绰号。小时候前额与后脑勺儿突出得特别厉害，而现在变正常了，其原因很有趣。小时候的我与女孩子的外貌恰恰相反，特别淘气。当时很流行摔跤比赛，我和妈妈都非常喜欢著名选手金一，于是我就模仿起他的专长碰头，时间长了我的寿星脑袋不知不觉地就形成了。除此之外，与两个哥哥一起爱玩拳击、摔跤等稍微剧烈的游戏，由于非常有记忆的六七次“失败”，直到现在在膝盖上还留着伤疤。

　　记得五六岁过圣诞节时，和朋友们一起上台表演跳舞、唱歌，其中有一个节目，大家一个个地向前站出来唱一句“我将来想当××”的节目。轮到我的时候我不知说什么才好，踌躇了半天，旁边的指导老师叫我说当个演员，说老实话当时我根本不知道演员究竟是做什么的。尽管不懂，但是照老师的话吼着嗓门地唱了一句“想当个演员”，不料，观众向我拍手叫好，也许就从那个时候起，我不知不觉地抱起了当演员的念头了。

　　小学一年级的时候，我的生活发生了很大的变化——转学！漫长的转学路使我原本外向、活泼的性格调转了180度，幼小的心中受到了很多伤害。我抛弃了当演员的幻想，要做个老师。

　　小学四年级有一天，同学的爸爸建议让我当模特儿。我当模特儿？！那时候我根本不知道模特儿做什么工作。开学校运动会的那天，一位同学的爸爸急着来找我，以前他去春游的时候见过我一次，对我的印象比较深，这回专程来找我拍广告。就这样我和其他三个朋友一起到野外摄影，拍把脚放在峡谷溪水里玩儿的镜头和在摄影室里钓鱼，那时我觉得又好玩儿又神奇。

　　虽然不知道模特儿是什么，不过从小就喜欢照相的我，在脑海里留下了终身难忘的回忆，现在再想也许那时积累的经验一直支持到后来模特儿和演员生活。

　　白皙肌肤、清纯眼神，已经34岁的李英爱依然拥有少女一般亮丽的外型，同时周身又散发成熟女人的迷人韵味。在“野蛮女友”全知贤成为亚洲男人新宠之前，凭《共同警备区》、《春逝》和韩剧《火花》走红亚洲的李英爱是最受人们喜爱的韩国女星，曾接连被评选为“最受欢迎韩国女星”和“台湾男人的新梦中情人”。2004年，她因主演大型韩国历史剧《大长今》，在韩国MBC演技大奖颁奖中获得最高演技大奖，成为年度韩国演技女王。

访谈：你对哪些中国导演比较熟悉？

李英爱：韩国的观众也非常喜欢中国电影，而且对一些世界级的导演同样了如指掌。比如王家卫、张艺谋、陈凯歌，他们的作品我大部分都看过，给我的感觉是他们风格迥异，但电影本身都相当有质感，有自己的特色，我实在无法对他们单独评价，但希望有机会能与他们合作。

访谈：这次看到你始终有种不真实的感觉，总觉得李英爱真是太漂亮了，你是怎么保养的？

李英爱：我也没有特别的保养，而且也不觉得自己的皮肤特别好，但还是谢谢你的夸奖。其实韩国女孩的皮肤普遍都不错，因为韩国的气候比较湿润的原因吧。但我想要保持皮肤的良好状态，平时注意睡眠和多喝水最重要，简单说这就是我的护肤攻略了。

访谈：你怎样评价长今这个人物？

李英爱：我觉得长今是个普通人。我想让观众感受到的是，就算是平常人，也会因为她有着什么样的思想，因为她为生活做了很多努力而可以成为不平凡的人。可是剧作者似乎把她刻画成了一个十分非凡的人物，所以甚至有些让我不知所措。(笑)

访谈：这么多的台词是怎么样全背下来的，连演员同事们都觉得不可思议。

李英爱：说过的台词就要全部忘掉，这样才能把脑袋空出来背新的台词。

访谈：在电视剧中有很多学习料理的场面。这样通过电视剧学到的常识在实际生活中能派上用场吗？

李英爱：虽然只学到些皮毛，但好像真的很有用。特别是我发现我们的料理样子美观，对身体也好，制作的时候还要花很多的心思，真是让我感叹不已。

访谈：在拍摄《大长今》的过程中最让你难忘的事？

李英爱：和严寒的抗争。演员们和所有的剧组人员都吃了不少苦。在拍摄的时候，热比冷要好得多啊。我觉得大长今不是悲剧。它很乐观，也很平和，可以让所有人看了都尽兴。另外，虽然大长今是史剧，而且各地观众也会有文化上的差异，但我觉得人们基本的情绪和感情是相同的。

访谈：自《春逝》以来，这是您在两年半之后才和影迷见面了，下一个作品也会让人期待那么久吗？

李英爱：不会的。我会尽快找到好剧本，再和观众朋友见面的(李英爱现已接下朴赞郁导演的《亲切的京慈》)。不会再出现像这次这么长的空白期了。在接到《大长今》的剧本时，我只是想要做出一个好作品，但真没想到会受到这么多观众的喜爱。想再次向观众朋友们表示感谢。”

访谈：对你所扮演的大长今一角，你最喜欢她的什么特性？

李英爱：大长今既不是王族也不是贵族，而是平民出身，也没有什么天才般的才能。但是大长今有韧性，很乐观，就像不倒翁一样永远不放弃。我特别被她这种“平凡的魅力”所吸引。

访谈：大长今让你有什么收获？

李英爱：大长今不仅让我在演技上更加纯熟，更成为了让我本身更加成熟的契机。我学到了很多做人的道理。《大长今》既没有暴力也没有什么政治性，但它就像韩国的泡菜一样，成为所有国民都喜爱的电视剧。在拍摄《大长今》的六个月中，我深深地感悟到，拍一个电视剧，并不只是一个人的事，它需要所有的人齐心协力。

访谈：您曾在书中说过曾到印度等很多国家旅行，请谈谈对旅行的看法。

李英爱：简单地说，我在旅行中学到的是一种价值观的改变。比起读十遍书，自己出去走一遭似乎更有效。经历了磨难感悟到的东西对我来说是更大的收获。看过世界，你的视野才会更广阔，更深远。

访谈：为什么韩流在日本和台湾会流行呢？

李英爱：并不是单凭文化一方面的特色就能收到观众的喜爱。这是在文化经济等各方面取得成果的产物。虽然韩国人在文化上有着特别的喜爱和热情，但不仅因此，还有多元化，经过长期的潜移默化取得的成果才造就今天这样的成功。

访谈：希望将来大众记忆中的自己是什么样的？

李英爱：首先最大的希望当然是人们认同我的演技。不过不仅是演技，我还希望人们记得我是一个亲切的人，能让别人感到安心的人。
